Faces and hands washed but their clothes still covered in grime, the four of them sat down to heaped bowls of fettuccine bolognaise, three accompanied by very large glasses of red wine. Kat’s hands, forearms, biceps, neck, back and legs had all started to ache and she could tell from the rigid way Jim was sitting that he wasn’t entirely comfortable either. Leo had a glazed look, the precursor to either a bout of delirious high energy, or total collapse. Only Betsy seemed buoyant.

‘That’s that done,’ she said with satisfaction.

‘Thank you, guys. You’ve been absolute champions.’

‘Our pleasure,’ said Jim, refilling her glass. ‘And Wilson doesn’t have kids of his own. He’s not married, either. Single, in fact.’

Kat coloured and looked at him crossly.

‘Wilson’s nice,’ piped up Leo, unexpectedly emerging from his stupor.

‘Wilson is nice,’ said Betsy firmly.

Leo swung around to look at Kat. ‘Is he your boyfriend?’

‘No!’

‘What is he?’

He’s just the coffee guy! thought Kat desperately. Then: Well, obviously that’s no longer quite true. He knows some of the most embarrassing details of my private life. He’s helped me move house. He’s met my closest friends. He’s put the bits of my bed together and used my bathroom. And yet… I don’t know the first thing about him. Except that he used to be a chemist. He makes great coffee. And, despite being an arsehole, he is one of the kindest people I’ve ever met.

‘He’s a friend,’ she said eventually.

‘He has spectacular guns,’ said Betsy.

‘He’s just a friend,’ said Kat sternly.

‘Why didn’t he show me his guns?’ asked Leo, peeved. Jim burst out laughing.
